Magdalena Thé – Mental Health Counselor, M.Sc.
Board Eligible National Certified Counselor
My role as a Mental Health Counselor is that of a helper and a partner in my client’s journey of change, to heal and grow and accomplish personal goals. I take a holistic approach, looking at a person’s inner, emotional, spiritual, physical, and behavioral health. My work is primarily informed by a developmental view that is optimistic about human potential: I build on people’s strengths and resources. As a Christian and if faith is a resource for an individual I am able to integrate this person’s spirituality into our work irrespective of his or her religious orientation.
I work with men, women and children, often empowering women with a variety of mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, stress, anger management, grief and loss, adjustment / transition issues and women who are coming to terms with traumatic childhoods. I specialize in women with low self-esteem and low sense of self-worth as well as women who are faced with relationship struggles. I facilitate a weekly Women Support Group on Wednesday evenings at Small Steps, near the Worker’s Stadium.
My passion for people spills over to humanitarian and community work. I have done aid work in Papua for Médecins Sans Frontieres, a large international medical humanitarian organization, and have worked for many years as a volunteer for Magic Hospital, a grass root charity that helps sick and underprivileged children in China.
I grew up in the Netherlands from Indonesian parents of Chinese heritage. In the Netherlands I received a B.A. in Hotel Management and Administration and a M.A. in Culture, Organization, and Management. I received a M.Sc. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. I have been living in Beijing since 1994. I have a natural understanding of cross-cultural issues and questions surrounding one’s identity that arise from being from two different cultures, and from living in a third.
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my husband, our two children and friends. I enjoy different dancing disciplines, music, tennis and skiing.
I am a member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association and practice in different locations, at Small Steps Coaching, Agape Counseling Center, and Yin Yang Community Center. I also see clients at the Tianjin SOS International Clinic.
My fee is RMB 600 per one-hour session.
Please feel free to contact me directly for more information or to set up an appointment.
